NOGUCHI IN PARIS: THE UNESCO GARDEN book
NOGUCHI IN PARIS: THE UNESCO GARDEN book
In 1958, thanks to the garden project commissioned by UNESCO for its new headquarters in Paris, Noguchi created an outdoor work that enabled him to confront modern sculpture and, in a way, his own Japanese-American origins.
He designed this garden in 2 spaces: a lower garden with modelled stone surfaces, greenery, rock arrangements, a shallow waterfall and a pond that directly recalled the heritage of Japanese garden design.
The upper part is designed as a balcony onto the lower garden, a more mineral, more radical terrace populated by sculptures and sculptural furniture. The historical and contemporary photographs in this book show the evolution of the project, and its colours and textures through the seasons.
